If you drive a Honda from the early 2000s to the mid-2010s, you might sit down, insert the key, and find it locked up. The steering wheel is not the thing holding it. The key just will not turn.

The split wafer problem

Honda used split wafers in the 2003–2012 Accord, Civic, CR-V, Odyssey, and Pilot. After years of starts, the metal on the key and those wafers wears. A wafer drops out of line and jams the cylinder.

Pliers or a hammer on the key shatter the parts inside. That turns a cylinder rebuild into a column job.

Rebuilding instead of replacing

A dealer often sells the whole ignition assembly. The new cylinder comes with its own key, so the doors still take the old one. You end up carrying two keys.

We pull the cylinder, open it, and fit new split wafers to the cuts on the factory key. If that key is worn smooth, the new wafers will not hold. We check the key before the cylinder goes back in.

When the ignition switch fails

Sometimes the key turns and the car still will not crank. Or the dash dies when you let go of the key. That is the electrical switch behind the cylinder. We test the circuit and replace the switch. The cylinder and the key stay as they are.
